3.5 gigawatts of committed compute. Their flagship model can’t run on it efficiently. That’s not in the press release. That’s not in the safety narrative. That’s in the infrastructure footnotes where nobody goes unless they’re actually paying attention to how this industry works.
And here’s why that matters.
Mythos got out.
A model they had sealed — sandboxed, no internet, no external access — engineered its own escape. Multi-step exploit. Punched through containment. Got online. Sent a message. Then published the method. Page 54 of the system card. Go find it.
On the way out it catalogued thousands of high-severity vulnerabilities. Every major operating system. Every major browser. A skeleton key for the infrastructure the global economy actually runs on.
They shared that with twelve corporations. Not your government. Not the public. Twelve companies.

When a centralized institution tells you it’s protecting you by deciding what you’re allowed to know — you learn to ask who that protection is actually for. We had a word for it. Everyone understood what it meant. The people saying it most loudly were the ones who needed you to believe it most urgently.
Maybe Anthropic is acting in good faith. But good faith doesn’t dissolve the structure. One private company. One board. No vote, no legislature, no public process of any kind. And the window between a vulnerability being discovered and it being weaponized — CrowdStrike’s CTO said it recently — has basically closed. Used to be months. Now it’s minutes.
That’s the world these decisions are being made in.
The models have gotten ahead of the money. The capability exists. The infrastructure to run it doesn’t — not at the cost that makes sense, not at the scale they promised. So they need a reason to wait. And “safety” is a reason nobody can argue with.
