Every diligence checklist in this category asks about headcount. Almost none of them ask about the ratio that actually determines whether headcount scales with growth or stays flat while revenue climbs: agents per human.
Ask a prospective operator what that ratio is today, and what it’s targeting eighteen months out. Most won’t have a number ready. The ones that do are telling you something real about whether their cost base scales with facility count or decouples from it.
A traditional operator adding its fifth facility adds staff roughly proportional to the first four. An operator running toward a real agents-per-human ratio, if the commissioning ladder behind it is real, graded, and gated the way it’s supposed to be, adds facilities without adding headcount at the same rate, because the marginal unit runs on the same fleet that proved itself on the first one.
That ratio doesn’t show up in a capex table or a GPU spec sheet. It shows up years later, in whether an operator’s overhead grew with its footprint or stayed flat, and by then the diligence window has closed. Ask for it now, while it’s still a forward-looking number instead of a lagging one.
